Big Dog Ranch Animal Rescue

A look inside the ranch...
My first visit to “The Ranch” was through some gentle prodding of a big hearted friend who, innocently enough, wanted to show me where she volunteered. I liked dogs, and happened to own a few myself so I was interested to see my dear friend in action.
Funny thing, the moment the fence was opened to Big Dog Ranch, about ten dogs run to greet you with wagging tails and unbridled licks of appreciation. Wow, I thought, how lovely and what an instant boost to my tired spirit. My son, who was my escort, ravished in his new-found friendships. He instantly bonded with a skin over bones German Shepard named Banjo who had obviously been abused. How anyone could abuse such a face and sweet demeanor like his, I just don’t know.
As the tour started I noticed the care and detail put into the ranch down to the different color collars with names for each animal to the detailed medication and supply lists. Each dog had a different story with a different need and every need was fully attended to.
The back kennel is where I saw some of the special cases, mangled limbs from abuse or car accidents, it was almost too sad to bear. The amazing part was how each volunteer or hired hand knew exactly what to do for each furry soul. There was a pack of dogs being trained for introduction into a new home at the front of the ranch, and one special boy getting some one-on-one physical therapy.
I spoke to the staff, watched a load of dog food being moved into the main house, and observed a SUV dropping off some of the cutest Weimaraner puppies ready for training then adoption. The phone seemed to never stop ringing. I now knew why my friend Megan wanted to spend her time here, as there is so much that needs to be done to help this organization.
I will tell you we did not leave alone, my son needed to bring Banjo home because he knew we could fatten him up with love. And that we have, Banjo aka Buddy is now very fat and happy.
Take a moment to consider what kind of role you can play in making a difference in these dog’s lives.
